April Minutes

Asian American Journalists Association-Hawaii Chapter
April Meeting

Sunday, April 3, 2005 at Gordon Biersch at 4 p.m.

I.               Meeting was called to order at 4:10 pm by Shauna Goya.  Present: Darren Pai, Joann Shin, Yu Shing Ting, Eric Udouj, Craig Gima, Alice Kim, Eugene Tanner, Wes Nakama.

II.             President’s Report:

a.     WWII Film screening at UH on March 18th went well with a strong turn-out of about 50-60 people.  Shauna says Daniel Chinen, Moon Yun Choi, Wes Nakama and Eric Udouj were among those who attended.  Organizer, Senator Les Ihara wants to keep AAJA involved in future events.  He wants us to again co-sponsor a discussion luncheon with Honolulu Community Media Council.  Board agreed to co-sponsor the event on April 19th.

b.      Membership Update- Shauna says only 20 members paid dues.  There are 40 people on the membership list.  Get your dues in!

c.      Student internships- AAJA is sponsoring internships at Honolulu Advertiser and the Honolulu Star Bulletin.  Each intern will be paid $2000.

III.           Treasurer’s Report: Yu Shing says finances have not changed.  No checks were written since last meeting.

IV.           National Representative Report:

a.      Craig says national alcohol policy will remain the same. Headquarters wanted to change policy to ban chapter from reimbursing members for buying alcohol at sponsored events.  Currently, chapters are not allowed to reimburse for alcohol, except under special circumstances.  But HQ wanted to ban any kind of reimbursement.

b.     Treasurer’s meeting at AAJA convention is coming up.  The meeting will cover important information, such as filing chapter taxes.

c.     Headquarters also suggested having 2 separate accounts for money from fundraising.  One account should solely be for scholarships.  It makes it easier on treasurer.

d.     Membership coordinator- Craig wants to establish a position devoted to recruiting members.

e.     For upcoming convention, chapters are being asked to write up guidelines for unique events, such as how to set up a media Basketball league (Hawaii is the only chapter to have this league).  Chapters will have ideas on display at this year’s convention, along with a catchy prop such as basketball alongside guidelines.

f.      Hawaii chapter needs to create video to promote 2006 convention.  Darren will be in charge of video.  Craig has examples of past video presentations.

V.             Basketball League- Yu Shing reported 10 teams have signed up.  The first game is on April 17th.  Each team, except for UH Media Relations (waived fees because UH is providing gyms) will pay $400 to participate.  AAJA needs help with scoring.  Wes suggested asking one person from each team to help out at games.  Shauna will wait on purchasing snacks to sell until after the first game.

VI.           College Night- The event set at KHNL News 8/K5 will be held on Thursday, April 14th between 7:30-9:30 p.m.  Students will get advice from journalists and then see a live taping of K5 News at Nine with Stephanie Lum and Walter Makaula.  Chapter will order pizza and drinks.

VII.         Sushi and Sake Night- Eugene is looking into the Honolulu Academy of Art to host this year’s fundraiser.  Darren suggested looking into new Japanese restaurant, Shokudo on Kapiolani Boulevard.

VIII.       Professional Workshop- Members will learn the inner workings of the military.  Chapter wants to make sure there’s a good turn-out, at least 20 people.  The workshop is tentatively set for Monday, May 2nd at Camp Smith.

IX.           Next meeting is SATURDAY, May 7, 2005 at          10 am, Honolulu Advertiser conference room.  At the meeting, we’ll go over scholarship applications and applications for travel grants for the 2005 AAJA convention in Minneapolis.
