February Meeting

10 a.m. Saturday, February 12, 2005 at Honolulu Advertiser conference room

 

I.               Call to Order- The meeting called to order by Shauna Goya at 10:15 a.m.

Present: Yu Shing Ting, Moon Yun Choi, Kanoa Leahey, Jaymes Song, Eric Udouj, Daniel Chinen, Craig Gima, Joann Shin, Wes Nakama, Catherine Toth, and Darren Pai.

II.             Approval of Minutes- January meeting minutes were approved.

III.           TreasurerÕs Report- Jaymes met with Yu Shing to go over chapter

      finances.  As of closing of 2004, AAJA Hawaii Chapter had $28,983.94.  The   

      chapter saw an increase of $2,000 over 2003.  The board needs to decide how    

      aggressive we want to be with fundraising. 

-He talked about chapterÕs three (3) accounts: First Hawaiian Bank, Morgan Stanley, and the Hawaii Media Federal Credit Union. 

-The First Hawaiian Bank account has $2625.50 and requires a minimum of $2500.  We need account, since bank gives us a credit card machine to process credit card transactions. 

-The Morgan Stanley account ($8872.56) is a money market account and we can invest the money in stocks, bonds, and etc.   

-The credit union account breaks down as follows: Checking: $418.29; Savings: $10029.04; Fundraising (Basketball Tournament Revenues): $2038.55; and Jaymes  purchased a CD for $5,000.

   a.            The board canÕt touch the CD until November 2005.  Will decide then whether to spend money earned, buy another CD, etc.     

IV.           PresidentÕs Report- Shauna is working on the AAJA-Hawaii Chapter

letterhead.  The letterhead has officersÕ name and contact information.  Jaymes suggested we have a logo that incorporates Hawaii, such as an AAJA logo with a palm tree. 

-Chapter website is still under construction.    

-Shauna reported that Senator Les Ihara approached her about AAJA co-sponsoring a World War II film by Tom Coffman.  The film screening is scheduled for March 18th at UH.  Darren and Craig say Coffman is well respected filmmaker. 

V.             Vice PresidentÕs Report-Wes won a free party at Ocean Club on Friday,

February 18th.   HeÕs allowing AAJA to use opportunity to throw a mixer.  The event runs from 5-7 pm and members can get 2 $1 drinks.  Board will pay $100 for pupus. 

      VI.       National RepÕs Report-National Board meeting is March 17-20 in Phoenix,

      Arizona.  Board will pay for half of CraigÕs hotel expenses at $350.    

-He brought sign up sheet for committees for the AAJA national convention hosted by Hawaii in 2006.  He wants people to sign up before he goes to Phoenix.

-Craig suggested having 4 off-site seminars during 2006 convention, including a session at Iolani Palace to discuss Hawaiian issues, one at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center to talk about its role in tsunamis, a seminar at the Waipahu Plantation Village to discuss immigration issues and tie into the 100th anniversary of Filipino immigration to the U.S. and the final session would be at Arizona Memorial.

-Shauna suggested holding a convention meeting open to all AAJA members.

-Hawaii chapter will host Thursday National Awards Luncheon at Minneapolis convention.  Chapter needs to provide 1,000 favors for tables.  We need sponsors to supply Hawaii specific goodies. 

-Hawaii is required to make video promoting Hawaii as host city for convention. Deadline is this August during Minneapolis convention.

-Eugene continued discussion on giving away surfboard at convention to one person to promote 2006 Hawaii convention.  Another suggestion is to give gift basket of Hawaii goodies.  Board will continue discussing. 

-Craig needs boardÕs response to two questions brought up by national headquarters.  Should AAJA expand its ÒMedia watchÓ to include radio shock jocks (i.e. Howard Stern)?  Darren says yes, since public clumps all of us together.  Board agreed.  The next question: Should bloggers be allowed to join AAJA?  Board says no, since bloggers donÕt have any accountability and are not required to be fact based.     

-Craig reported Sheraton will be official hotel for the 2006 convention.  No availability at Hilton Hawaiian Village.

VII.        Membership Drive- Joann will be in charge of event.  Possible sites include Gordon Biersch and Compadres.  The event scheduled for April 1st during early evening.  More details at March meeting.

VIII.       Basketball Tournament- Yu Shing will run media league with KanoaÕs help.  Games begin Sunday, April 10th.  Deadline to sign up is March 15th.  Yu Shing got gym at UH  in exchange for waiving entry fee for UH media league.  There will be 4 games each Sunday from 6 to 10 pm.  Entry fee has been raised from $350 to $400.

IX.           Scholarships- As Vice President, Wes will coordinate scholarship program. 

The board decided to give more money, from $1500 to $2000.  This yearÕs application will have a new question, asking students about need for financial aid. 

X.             Workshop- Eric is organizing a professional development workshop. 

The workshop will help journalists improve knowledge and skills when it comes to working with the military.  The seminar will be in May on a Saturday morning. 

XI.           Chapter t-shirts- Darren showed designs created by Dave Amodo.    

 WeÕll continue to look at more options at next meeting.  The design should reflect 

 Hawaii.  Yu Shing provided a price scale:  $100 for 50 shirts and 1 color; $112.50 for  

 2 colors and $125 for 3 colors.  The shirt would cost just over $5 to make. 

Chapter can sell for $10-15.    

XII.         Student Representative- Shauna says chapter needs a student rep.

XIII.       Next meeting- Sunday, March 13, 2005 at the Honolulu Advertiser conference room.
